Felicity (TV series)
Felicity is an American college drama series created by J. J. Abrams and Matt Reeves. It aired on The WB from 1998 to 2002, spanning four seasons and 84 episodes. The show follows Felicity Porter (Keri Russell) as she tries to find her path after high school.
Felicity leaves Stanford to follow her crush Ben Covington to New York, enrolling at the fictional University of New York (UNY), a stand-in for NYU. She moves into a dorm in Greenwich Village and begins the busy, funny, and sometimes romantic college life that unfolds.
Her circle includes Meghan Rotundi, her goth roommate; Julie Emrick and Elena Tyler, close friends; and male friends like Sean Blumberg and Javier Clemente Quintata. The central drama comes from Felicity’s relationship with Ben and her developing romance with Noel Crane, creating a love triangle that runs through the series.
A recurring plot device is Felicity narrating episodes into a tape recorder for her friend Sally Reardon, a framing device used in many scenes.
Felicity was filmed in New York City and Los Angeles. UNY is depicted as a campus similar to NYU. The show received praise and earned recognition, including a spot on Time magazine’s All-Time 100 Best TV Shows list. Keri Russell won a Golden Globe for her performance, and the series earned an Emmy for cinematography.
A famous moment in the show involved Felicity’s hair changing styles, which some blamed for a drop in ratings. Russell later argued the decline was due to multiple factors, including time-slot changes. Despite the controversy, the series continued for two more seasons and remains influential in television history.
Home media releases followed, with Seasons 1–4 released on DVD and later re-releases by Lionsgate.
