Eritrea–Kenya relations

Eritrea–Kenya relations are the bilateral ties between Eritrea and Kenya. Tensions surfaced in 2011 when Kenya’s Foreign Ministry accused Eritrea of supplying arms to the Al-Shabaab group; Eritrea denied the claim, and Kenya threatened to review their relations. By 2013, ties had improved: Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki attended Kenya’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in Nairobi during a state visit. Afwerki made another state visit in late 2018, and in January 2019 Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta visited Asmara for a Tripartite Summit with Ethiopia and Eritrea. In late 2022, Kenyan President William Ruto visited Asmara on a diplomatic trip. The two countries signed an agreement enabling visa-free travel for their passport holders. They also maintain trading ties as IGAD members. Eritrea has no exports to Kenya, but Eritrea imports about $4–5 million worth of goods annually from Kenya. Eritrea has an embassy in Nairobi, while Kenya’s embassy in Cairo is accredited to Eritrea.
