The 41st Coppa Italia took place in Italy from 23 August 1987 to 19 May 1988, featuring 48 teams. A total of 150 matches were played and 354 goals were scored (about 2.36 per game). Diego Maradona was the top scorer with 6 goals.

Sampdoria won the cup for the second time, beating Torino 3–2 on aggregate in a two-legged final. The two final legs were held at Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa and Stadio Comunale in Turin. In this season, changes were made to the knockout rounds: 3 points for a win, 2 points for a win on penalties, and 1 point for a loss on penalties.
