Erebus: The Aftermath
Erebus: The Aftermath is a 1987 New Zealand TV mini-series about Air New Zealand Flight 901, which crashed in Antarctica in 1979. This docudrama, produced by Television New Zealand, aired in New Zealand and Australia and was shown on BBC2 in the United Kingdom. TVNZ repeated it to mark the crash’s 30th anniversary. The cast includes Frank Finlay as Justice Peter Mahon, who led the Royal Commission of Inquiry, and David Cole as the chief witness. The series was directed by Peter Sharp, written by Greg McGee, and produced by Caterina De Nave. It is partly based on Mahon’s book Verdict on Erebus. Erebus: The Aftermath won several New Zealand Film and TV Awards, including Best Drama Programme, Best Drama Series, Best Writer (Drama), Best Television Director, and Best Male Performance in a Dramatic Role (Ian Mune). A viewing copy is kept at the Wellington office of the New Zealand Film Archive, where it can be watched but not loaned or copied.
