Rose West
Rose West, born Rosemary Pauline Letts in 1953, is an English criminal known for helping her husband, Fred West, kill at least ten young women between 1973 and 1987. She also murdered her eight-year-old stepdaughter Charmaine in 1971. Most of the murders happened at their home, 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester. Fred killed himself in prison in 1995 after they were arrested in 1994. Rose was found guilty of ten murders in 1995 and is serving a life sentence with a whole-life tariff, meaning she will never be released.
Background and crime pattern: Rose grew up in troubled circumstances, with an abusive father and a difficult childhood. She met Fred West when she was a teenager, and they began a violent and controlling relationship. The couple moved to Cromwell Street and started a life that included prostitution, severe abuse of their children, and the exploitation and murder of other young women. Rose often controlled finances and ran a private room in the house for her clients, while Fred watched and assisted in the crimes. The couple’s violence extended to their own children, who endured ongoing physical and emotional abuse.
Notable events: Charmaine West disappeared in 1971 and was later found buried near Cromwell Street. The couple also abused and manipulated several other young women, including a 1972 case involving Caroline Owens. In 1994 police found human remains on the Cromwell Street property, leading to their arrest. During the trial, Rose claimed she did not know about the murders, but the evidence showed her as a central, controlling figure in the crimes.
Aftermath: The West house was demolished in 1996 to prevent souvenir hunting. Some of the West children were given new identities and placed in foster care. The case drew widespread attention to family violence and the brutal crimes carried out by the couple. Fred’s suicide left Rose to face trial alone; she remains in prison with a sentence that ensures she will spend the rest of her life behind bars.
