Emily Venie Barr (born 10 October 1971 in Howden, Yorkshire) is a British travel writer and novelist. She grew up in York and Norfolk, studied at Norwich High School for Girls and the Courtauld Institute of Art, and worked as a journalist for The Guardian before taking a year-long world trip in the late 1990s. While in Thailand she appeared as an extra in the film The Beach. The journey inspired her first novel, Backpack (2001), which won the WHSmith New Talent Award in 2002. She went on to write Baggage, Cuban Heels (2003), and Atlantic Shift (2004). The Life You Want (2009) is a sequel to Backpack. In 2014 she published Blackout for the Quick Reads series. Her first young adult novel, The One Memory of Flora Banks, was released as an ebook in 2016 and as a paperback in 2017; it has been translated into 26 languages and sold more than 50,000 copies. The Truth and Lies of Ella Black appeared in 2018. Her first horror novel, We Hear Voices, came out in 2020 in the US under the pen name Evie Green. Barr has taught writing at Falmouth University and the Faber Academy. She has lived in France and now lives in Falmouth, Cornwall with her husband Craig and their three children; she met him in China while traveling.
