Goodbye (Kristinia DeBarge song)
Goodbye is Kristinia DeBarge’s debut single from her album Exposed. It was released digitally in the United States on April 7, 2009 and to US radio on April 28, 2009; its UK release followed on August 10, 2009. The 3:28 dance-pop track samples Steam’s “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” and is about getting over an ex.
The music video, directed by Ray Kay, shows DeBarge and her friends stealing her ex’s car, flirting with other men, and ending at a house party where the ex shows up.
Reception was mixed. Some critics praised its catchy dance vibe and compared it to Rihanna’s “SOS,” while others criticized the over-familiar hook from the Steam sample. On the charts, it did best on the US Dance chart, reaching #3, and peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100. Internationally, it reached #15 in Canada, #26 in Sweden, and #41 on Australia’s Airplay chart (with #16 on the Hit Seekers chart).
Promotion included live performances on So You Think You Can Dance, Live with Regis and Kelly, and The Wendy Williams Show, and DeBarge opened for Britney Spears on The Circus Tour in 2009.
It was her biggest hit at the time and remains her only Hot 100 entry in the US.
