Emilio Álvarez Montalván
Emilio Álvarez Montalván was a Nicaraguan doctor and politician. He was born on July 31, 1919, in Managua. He earned his Doctorate in Medicine and Surgery in 1946 from the University of Chile, graduating cum laude. He specialized in ophthalmology in Buenos Aires in 1949 and later trained in Paris, London, and New York.
Álvarez was also a writer and active in Nicaraguan politics. He was imprisoned for one year in 1954–55 during the Somoza dictatorship. In 1996, at age 77, he was named Foreign Minister of Nicaragua. After leaving public life, he continued to influence policy through articles and lectures about politics and Nicaragua’s political culture. He received honorary doctorates in 2006–07 for his work.
Emilio Álvarez Montalván died on July 2, 2014. He was married to Carmen Guerra, and they had six children.
