Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department
Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. is a volunteer fire company serving Elkridge, Maryland, based at 5700 Rowanberry Drive. The department began with a meeting on April 8, 1942, and officially started on April 29, 1942, with Edward Falter as the first Fire Chief. The first fire truck, named “Daisy,” was built by volunteers from a 1934 junkyard chassis and even drew national attention.
In 1948, Station One was built on Old Washington Road near Dead Man’s Curve. By 2011, plans were announced for a new fire station because call volume had grown and the old building no longer fit the equipment. The county bought a 5-acre site on Bauman Drive and Montgomery Road, with additional land purchases and design costs to create a modern two-story station funded by state and county grants. The volunteer company would build a community hall at the new site to replace the one at the old location. Groundbreaking took place on September 8, 2014, with county officials in attendance.
Today, the department handles about 4,672 calls each year and provides paramedic-level EMS. It operates from one station with 2 engines, 1 squad, 2 ambulances, and 1 wildland vehicle; there are no fire trucks.
