Edith Kelly
Edith Kelly (1880 – December 1960) was an English actress best known for the 1908 theatre production Havana. She was born in Camberwell, London, to a window frame maker. She was the elder sister of Hetty Kelly, who is famous as Charlie Chaplin’s first love, and she had a brother, Arthur, who later worked for United Artists.
Kelly appeared in two short films in 1918.
She married Frank Jay Gould, the son of Jay Gould, in 1910 in Scotland. They moved to Paris and stayed married for nine years before divorcing in 1919. The divorce received a lot of publicity because of the money involved, and Kelly later tried to increase the settlement in the United States. She is quoted as telling young women not to marry “the idle rich.”
She married English filmmaker Albert de Courville in 1927. There were health concerns about de Courville before the wedding, but they married on 26 May at a registry office. They remained married until her death in December 1960 in Washington, DC.
