Duncanville is a city in southwestern Dallas County, Texas. It has about 40,700 residents (2020) and covers roughly 11 square miles of land. It’s part of the Best Southwest area, along with Cedar Hill, DeSoto, and Lancaster.

History in brief
Settlement began in 1845. The railroad arrived in 1880 and the place was renamed Duncanville in 1882. By the early 1900s it had basic stores, a pharmacy, a school, and a post office. Duncanville incorporated as a city on August 2, 1947. During World War II, nearby land was used for a flight field, later linked to Nike missile sites guarding Dallas–Fort Worth. The population grew quickly after the war, and the city became more diverse by the 1960s and 1970s.

Today
Duncanville runs a council-manager form of government. City Hall is at 203 E. Wheatland Road, which also houses the Recreation Center and Armstrong Park. The city has 17 parks, three walking trails, and several recreation spaces for team sports. U.S. Route 67 and Interstate 20 run through the area. The post office and the public library are in Duncanville.

Education
The city is served by the Duncanville Independent School District. Duncanville High School has about 3,750–4,000 students and a very large campus. About 13 of the district’s 17 schools are rated Exemplary or Recognized by the Texas Education Agency, indicating strong performance. The district also includes the administrative offices of Advantage Academy.

History and culture
Duncanville preserves its history at Duncanville Historical Park on Wheatland Road, where some old buildings and exhibits are shown. A monument near the library honors the old Nike Missile Station. The city is a member of the North Central Texas Council of Governments, which helps coordinate regional planning.
