Dowry Kalyanam (Dowry Marriage) is a 1983 Tamil-language comedy-drama film written and directed by Visu, produced by S. Suseela, and produced under Charuchithra Films. The film stars Visu, Vijayakanth, Srividya, S. Ve. Shekher, and Viji, with music by M. S. Viswanathan. It is based on Visu’s play Dowry Kalyana Vaibhogame. The story explores friendship, family pressures, and the dowry system.

Plot (simplified)
In Thiruninravur, two best friends, Ganesan and Ethiraj, live with their families. Ethiraj, a widower, is poor and often borrows money; Ganesan’s family is also struggling and hopes to arrange a good marriage for Gowri, Ganesan’s sister. Ethiraj’s closeness to Gowri leads to misunderstandings, and a rift forms between the friends. To keep Gowri’s marriage on track, Ganesan decides to find a groom, Mangupathi, but discovers that the groom’s family demands a large dowry.

Ganesan and his family scramble to raise funds. They pawn items, borrow from Rowther, and turn to relatives and friends for help. The wedding plan is chaotic: dowry demands rise, relatives contribute what they can, and money is mismanaged at times. A man claiming to be Kuselan arrives with help, but the true Kuselan’s arrival later resolves the situation. Eventually, the real DIG Kuselan provides the necessary funds, and Ethiraj also contributes. The wedding proceeds, though Gowri asks that borrowed jewelry be replaced so the cycle of dowry pressures can end. A sub-plot involves Neelakanda Sastri’s elder daughter falling for Mangupathi’s friend Kalyanam. In the end, Ganesan’s brother Natesan marries the hall owner’s daughter at the same venue with no dowry demanded.

Production and release
The film was launched at AVM Studios with the recording of the song Endhan Kannana and was shot in a village near Tiruvallur. Music was composed by M. S. Viswanathan, with lyrics by Vaali. Dowry Kalyanam was released on 1 July 1983. It was later remade in Kannada as Madhuve Madu Tamashe Nodu (1984).

Reception
Kalki praised the performances of Visu, Nambiar, and Srividya and Visu’s direction, while noting that Viswanathan’s music wasn’t to their liking. Visu has said the censor board initially demanded 87 cuts for the portrayal of the Rowther character’s Hindi-Tamil speech; after adding a scene explaining the reason for the speech, the film cleared with no cuts.
