Román Escolano Olivares (born 1965 in Zaragoza, Spain) is a Spanish economist and politician. He served as Spain’s Minister of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness for about three months in 2018 under Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, until Rajoy’s government fell.

Before that, he was Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) from 2014 to 2018. In that role, he helped oversee EIB activities in Spain, Portugal, the Maghreb region, and Latin America, and he chaired the Supervisory Board of the Marguerite Fund. Earlier in his career, Escolano led Spain’s Official Credit Institute (ICO) from 2012 to 2014 and was the chief economic adviser to Prime Minister José María Aznar from 2000 to 2004. He also worked in the private sector as Director of Institutional Relations at BBVA.

As minister, he was an ex-officio board member of several international financial bodies, including the EIB, the European Stability Mechanism, CABEI, the EBRD, the IIC, the IMF, MIGA, and the World Bank.

Personal life: Escolano is married and has three children. He studied at the Autonomous University of Madrid and is affiliated with the People’s Party.
