Diocese of Nagoya
Diocese of Nagoya (Latin: Dioecesis Nagoyaensis; Japanese: カトリック名古屋教区) is a Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church based in Nagoya, Japan. It is part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Osaka. The diocese began as the Apostolic Prefecture of Nagoya on February 18, 1922, created from the Apostolic Prefecture of Niigata and the Tokyo Archdiocese, and was raised to the status of a diocese on April 16, 1962. It covers parts of Aichi, Ishikawa, Toyama, Gifu, and Fukui prefectures, spanning 28,486 square kilometers. As of 2004, about 12.4 million people lived in the area, with roughly 25,380 Catholics (about 0.2%). The diocese follows the Latin Rite, and its cathedral is the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul in Nagoya. The current bishop is Michael Gorō Matsuura, appointed in 2015, succeeding Augustinus Jun-ichi Nomura. The diocese is part of the Osaka Archdiocese, whose metropolitan archbishop is Thomas Aquino Manyo Maeda.
