Destrehan, Louisiana
Destrehan is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, on the east bank of the Mississippi River. It is part of the New Orleans metro area. The population was 11,340 at the 2020 census.
The town is named after Jean Noël Destréhan, an early Louisiana political leader. His home, Destrehan Plantation, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The restored main house is a stop along the Great River Road along the Mississippi.
Destrehan covers about 7.9 square miles, with 6.9 square miles of land and 1.0 square mile of water (about 12% water). Elevation is around 10 feet. Coordinates are 29°57′44″N, 90°22′09″W. ZIP code 70047; area code 985. The area first appeared as a census-designated place in 1980. In 2020, there were 4,257 households and 3,334 families. The community is served by the St. Charles Parish Public School System. Destrehan Plantation was also a filming location for the 2013 movie 12 Years a Slave.
