Dermot Lacey
Dermot Lacey (born 11 February 1960 in Dublin) is an Irish Labour Party politician and long-time Dublin City Councillor. He joined the Labour Party in 1977 and has represented different parts of Dublin on the city council since 1993, including the South East Inner City, Pembroke, Rathmines–Pembroke, Pembroke South Dock, and more recently the Pembroke area. He topped the poll in 2004 and has been re-elected in subsequent local elections, including 2009, 2014, 2019 and 2024.
Lacey served as Lord Mayor of Dublin from July 2002 to July 2003. His vote to approve the 2003 city budget, which included higher waste charges, was controversial. After that vote, he was expelled from the Labour Party Group on Dublin City Council and finished the rest of his term as an Independent councillor, though he remained a Labour member and later returned to the party. He was elected again as a Labour councillor in 2004 and has held leadership roles within the party on the council.
Beyond elections, Lacey has held significant positions: he was Leader of the Labour Group on Dublin City Council in 2012 and Cathaoirleach of the Southern and Eastern Regional Assembly. He published a book in 2011 called A Fair City – One Dublin Many Dubliners. He is also active in youth work and Scouting, has served on various youth boards, and has contributed to community initiatives in Dublin.
Lacey is married to Jill Lacey, and they live in Donnybrook with their two children.
