Denis D'Amour
Denis "Piggy" D'Amour (September 24, 1959 – August 26, 2005) was a Canadian guitarist and a member of the metal band Voivod from its start in 1982 until his death. He played with an anarchic, experimental style rather than strict theory. As a child he trained in classical violin and was inspired by progressive rock artists like King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and Rush.
In the summer of 2005, D'Amour was diagnosed with colon cancer. After a routine operation, complications showed the cancer was advanced, making surgery non-viable. He slipped into a coma at a Montreal hospital and died on August 26, 2005, around 11:45 p.m., surrounded by family and friends.
His final recordings appear on Voivod albums Katorz (released 2006) and Infini (released 2009). A documentary, Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, features an interview with him.
