David May (footballer)
David May (born 24 June 1970) is an English former footballer and coach. He played as a defender, mainly at centre-back but also as a right-back, from 1988 to 2006.
He began at Blackburn Rovers, coming through the youth system and making over 100 appearances. He helped Blackburn reach the Premier League in 1992 and stayed a regular as the club competed for the title.
In 1994 he joined Manchester United for £1.2 million. At United he started as a right-back but later moved into central defense. He was part of a very successful era, winning two Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the UEFA Champions League. He played in the 1996 FA Cup Final and scored in a Champions League quarter-final win over Porto in 1998. United also won the treble in 1998-99, with May in the squad, though his first-team appearances were limited.
He was loaned to Huddersfield Town for the 1999–2000 season. He returned to United but spent his final years mostly in reserve teams, leaving in 2003 with two Premier League medals despite a limited number of first-team appearances.
May then joined Burnley, where he played 39 games in the 2003–04 season and captained the side on occasion. He finished his playing career with non-league Bacup Borough (2004–2006), later becoming assistant manager there.
After retiring, May moved to Dubai to coach at a school and later worked as a wine importer. He has remained connected with Manchester United, appearing on MUTV and co-hosting the Official Manchester United Podcast. He was born in Oldham, grew up supporting Manchester City, and remains a United supporter.
