Daniel Lismore
Daniel Lismore (born 24 December 1984 in Bournemouth, England) is a British fabric sculptor, designer and campaigner. Vogue called him England’s most eccentric dresser. He makes living sculptures out of clothes, fabrics, found objects, chainmail and jewellery to express identity and culture.
He grew up in Fillongley near Coventry and studied photography and fashion design at Butts College. He moved to London at 17 to work as a photographer and model and became a prominent figure in fashion and nightlife.
Lismore has worked in fashion journalism and as a wardrobe assistant at Vogue and Pop. He creates large, cross-cultural fashion pieces and has dressed clients such as Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Rita Ora, Debbie Harry and Cara Delevingne.
In 2019 he gave a TED Talk, Be Yourself, about living sculpture. During the COVID-19 pandemic he split his time between Coventry and London to focus on LGBTQ+ activism and new art.
In 2022 his touring museum show Be Yourself, Everyone Else is Already Taken opened in Coventry, drawing thousands. His work blends fashion, performance and activism, and he is often compared to Leigh Bowery and Gilbert & George.
He has exhibited at Tate Modern (2013) and Tate Britain (2014). His first solo show opened in 2016 at SCAD Atlanta and toured worldwide. A Skira Rizzoli monograph followed in 2016. He has spoken at the Victoria and Albert Museum and has been named a Tate ambassador. He has appeared on Out Magazine’s Out 100 and on the Guardian’s Pride Power List.
An advocate for climate causes, he works with Cool Earth and Vivienne Westwood’s Climate Revolution. He also did charity work in Kenya and was involved in H&M’s Close the Loop campaign in 2016. He sparked media attention with a 2016 photo with Nigel Farage.
