Daenerys is a female given name inspired by Daenerys Targaryen, a character from George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books and the Game of Thrones TV series. Some parents chose the name for its associations with strength, beauty, freeing slaves, and ruling in her own right. The character’s darker turn on the TV show sparked discussion about naming children after her. The name’s popularity waned after the series ended, but it remains in use. In 2021, 108 American girls were named Daenerys, and in 2022, 123 were named. Related names include Dany and Khaleesi.
