The Facultad de Filosofía y Letras (School of Philosophy and Literature) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is a major humanities faculty in Mexico City. It runs eleven divisions and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees.

It is one of the largest and most respected literature schools in the Spanish-speaking world. It is the alma mater of Nobel Prize laureate Octavio Paz and many other important Mexican and Latin American writers and thinkers.

The school’s roots go back to 1910, when the High Studies National School was founded by Justo Sierra to promote graduate study and research. The School of Philosophy and Letters was created in 1924 with four majors: Sciences, Philosophy, Literature, and Historical Sciences. Over time it expanded, and the sciences were reorganized into a separate department.

The School is led by a Dean, currently Jorge Enrique Linares Salgado, PhD. It is located at Ciudad Universitaria in Mexico City, near the Law School and the Main Library, housing eleven divisions for undergrad and grad studies.

Faculty members collaborate on research with the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas (IIE) and the Instituto de Investigaciones Filológicas (IIF). There are also partnerships with the School of Engineering to develop Media, Arts, and Technology projects. Graduate programs exist in every division, and the School co-sponsors educational and research programs with other faculties and institutes across the country.

Many notable Mexican and Spanish-language writers, culture figures, and philosophers have studied or worked there.
