National anthem of the Orange Free State
National Anthem of the Orange Free State
The national anthem was used from 1854 to 1902. In Afrikaans it was called Vrystaatse Volkslied and in Dutch Volkslied van de Oranje Vrijstaat. The words were written by H.A.L. Hamelberg and the music composed by W.F.G. Nicolai.
The song expresses pride in the Free State, the desire to be free from foreign bonds, and the importance of order, law, and justice. It speaks of courage to face the future, faith in God as a fortress who does not fail those who trust Him, and asks for God’s protection and guidance for the President and the government. It calls for the land and its citizens to be blessed and for the state, the people, the President, and the Council to be praised. The anthem ends with a wish for many ages of growth and virtue for the Free State.
