Cruel, Cruel Love
Cruel, Cruel Love is a 1914 American silent comedy short from Keystone Studios. Charlie Chaplin plays Lord Helpus, a rich gentleman, not the Little Tramp. His romance with his girlfriend (Minta Durfee) is in jeopardy when she sees him embracing her maid and wrongly assumes he’s unfaithful. She throws him out. Distraught, Lord Helpus returns home, believes he will die, and swallows what he thinks is poison, envisioning Hell.
Soon the gardener and the maid explain to the girlfriend that Lord Helpus wasn’t flirting. She apologizes, and he panic-surges, thinking he’s dying and calling for an ambulance. The liquid in the glass was harmless water, switched by the butler.
Durfee, Chaplin’s love interest in the film, was married to Fatty Arbuckle at the time. The cast also includes Edgar Kennedy, Alice Davenport, Glen Cavender, Billy Gilbert, and Chester Conklin (uncredited).
The film was directed by George Nichols and Mack Sennett, written by Craig Hutchinson, produced by Mack Sennett, and released on March 26, 1914. It runs 16 minutes, is a silent film with English intertitles, and was produced by Keystone Studios and distributed by Mutual Film Corporation.
Cruel, Cruel Love was long believed lost, but a complete nitrate copy was found in South America. Restorations were done by David Shepard and Lobster Films, and the original two-reel version is available for sale. A contemporary reviewer described it as slight in texture, but a pleasing, laughable picture.
