Craig Hickman
Craig V. Hickman (born December 8, 1967) is an American writer, farmer, and Democratic politician from Maine. He has represented Maine Senate District 14 since a 2021 special election. Previously, he served in the Maine House of Representatives starting in 2012.
Hickman grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, was valedictorian at Rufus King High School, and earned a government degree from Harvard University in 1990. He lives in Winthrop, Maine, with his husband, Jop Blom. He runs the 25-acre Annabessacook Farm Bed & Breakfast and often gives free meals to people in need. He also writes a popular independent sports blog and has served as president of the Winthrop Area Rotary Club.
Openly gay, Hickman has campaigned on ending hunger, reducing regulations for small farms and businesses, and investing in sustainable energy. He first ran for the Maine House in 2010 but lost; he won the 2012 primary by a large margin and the general election, and was re-elected in 2014 by a wide margin. He was seriously burned in 2018 while trying to light a brush pile. His book Fumbling Toward Divinity was a Lambda Literary Award finalist in 2006, and he has received fellowships and awards from groups like the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the James Baldwin Award for Cultural Achievement.
