Corporate Ministry
The Corporate Ministry was a bad guy group in WWF (now WWE) in 1999. It formed when The Corporation merged with The Ministry of Darkness, uniting to take on their common enemies Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and Mr. McMahon. The big twist was that Vince McMahon himself was secretly behind the group, aiming to crush Austin.
Leaders from the two sides were The Undertaker (Ministry) and Shane McMahon (Corporation). Early in 1999, Vince clashed with The Undertaker, and Shane took charge of The Corporation after ousting his father. The plan soon shifted: Vince, hurt by his family’s actions, stepped back while Shane pressed the attack with the Corporate Ministry.
The group grew into a massive heel faction after their April 29, 1999 appearance on SmackDown, when The Undertaker’s Ministry and Shane’s Corporation merged. They faced major stars like Austin and The Rock, and even kidnapped Stephanie McMahon, Austin’s ally.
A new opposition formed on Raw Is War: Ken Shamrock, Big Show, and Test joined Mankind to create The Union, seeking to stop the Corporate Ministry.
One of the key early moments was Over the Edge, where Shane was a guest referee for a match between Austin and Undertaker. The night featured a double ref setup with Vince as well, and Shane counted the winning pin for Undertaker. The rivalry continued, with The Acolytes winning the WWF Tag Team Championship at one point.
The story also included a “Higher Power” angle. The Undertaker claimed a higher power was guiding him and ultimately revealed that Vince McMahon was the mastermind behind it. After the reveal, Linda and Stephanie McMahon used their combined WWF shares to punish Vince, with Linda stepping down as CEO and naming Austin as her successor, as they handed over more shares to him.
The Corporate Ministry’s power struggle peaked at King of the Ring, where a series of matches and interference shaped the title picture. By late July, the group’s influence waned, and on August 2, 1999, Shane McMahon formally disbanded the Corporate Ministry. The members went their separate ways: The Acolytes kept wrestling as a duo (later becoming The APA), The Undertaker formed the Unholy Alliance with Big Show, and other members faded from the spotlight.
In hindsight, The Undertaker later called the Corporate Ministry the low point of his dark era, as power shifted away from him to the McMahon family. The era left behind new storylines and several wrestlers who continued on in different roles within the company.
