Connacht Minor Hurling Championship
The Connacht Minor Hurling Championship was an annual under-18 hurling competition in Connacht, organized by the Connacht Council of the GAA. It ran from 1931 until 1989, though not every year. Games were played in the summer, with the final usually in June or July. The winning team received an unnamed cup, and the matches were knockout—losing a game meant elimination from the series.
The Connacht champion advanced directly to the semi-finals of the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship. Typically, the strongest teams were Galway, Roscommon, and Mayo, with Leitrim becoming more competitive later.
Galway dominate the championship, winning it a record 26 times. In 1959, Galway’s hurling teams moved to Munster, which made the competition more balanced for Roscommon, Mayo, and Leitrim. In 1967 the provincial championship effectively ended when Roscommon entered the All-Ireland Minor B Hurling Championship. Galway returned in 1970 and represented Connacht without opposition until 1989, when the championship was revived unsuccessfully.
Since then Galway has represented Connacht in the All-Ireland series, while the other Connacht counties have competed in the All-Ireland Minor B Championship. The competition is now defunct.
