Cirebon Sundanese, also called Northeast Sundanese, is a group of Sundanese language varieties spoken in the area that used to be the Cirebon Residency and nearby regions, including Kuningan, Majalengka, Cirebon, and Indramayu. About 60% of people in that area are speakers. In 2020, the population of the area was about 6.57 million, so around 3.94 million people speak Cirebon Sundanese. It includes several local dialects: Northeast Sundanese in Kuningan, Middle-East Sundanese in Majalengka, Parean Sundanese (Kandanghaur), Lelea Sundanese (Lelea in Indramayu), and the Cirebon-Indramayu dialect. The Banyumas Javanese dialect arrived in the area in the early 20th century via the Tegal-Brebes railway, influencing the language there. Cirebon Sundanese differs from standard Sundanese (Priangan Sundanese) in sound, vocabulary, and sentence patterns. It remains a living language used daily for conversation, culture, and communication with government. It is written using the Latin alphabet.
