Circus schools train people in circus skills, sometimes offering degrees. They help keep traditional acts alive and support new acts. Gamma Phi Circus at Illinois State University is the oldest college circus in the United States, started in 1929 and part of ISU's College of Applied Science and Technology. The Florida State University Flying High Circus began in 1947 as an extracurricular club and requires members to be degree-seeking students at FSU. There are also clubs for recreational training in modern circus arts, such as Cirque NouveaU: An Aerial Arts Club at Northwestern University, which teaches ground skills like partner balancing and tumbling to undergraduates.
