Christopher Liptrot
Christopher George Liptrot (born 13 February 1980 in Wigan, Greater Manchester) is a former English cricketer who played for Worcestershire. He was a left-handed batsman and a right-arm fast-medium bowler. His career was cut short by a persistent back problem, which led to retirement after the 2003 season.
Liptrot made his first-class debut in 1999 against Oxford University, taking one wicket in each innings and earning a place in Worcestershire’s team for the County Championship. His best early spell came in April 1999, when he took 5–51 in a rain-affected match against Surrey. After mid-June he dropped out of the first team, but he played three England Under-19 tests and three Youth ODIs against Australia with some success.
In 2000 he spent most of the season in the Second XI, failing to make an impact in a first-class match against the touring West Indies, but he produced two seven-wicket hauls for the Second XI and worked his way back into Worcestershire’s first team in mid-August. His first List A appearance was against Sussex, where he took the wicket of Chris Adams, though the match was abandoned after just over three overs. He soon recorded career-best figures in both formats: 6–44 in first-class cricket against Warwickshire and 3–44 in List A against Kent.
In 2001 he bowled more than in any previous season, taking 35 first-class wickets at a solid rate, but he never quite fulfilled his early promise. He played only sporadically in 2002 and 2003, including a few Twenty20 games in 2003, and retired at the end of 2003 due to injury. After cricket, he pursued a career in the rail industry.
