William Gibson (NAACP activist)
William F. Gibson (November 23, 1933 – May 2, 2002) was an African-American dentist and civil rights leader. He served as the chair of the NAACP from 1985 to 1995, after leading its Greenville, South Carolina chapter. Gibson studied at North Carolina A&T State University, earning a BA, and then earned a dental degree from Meharry Medical College. As NAACP chair, he pushed for voter registration and worked to improve economic opportunities for Black Americans. In 1995, the NAACP board voted 30–29 to replace him with Myrlie Evers-Williams. He died of cancer in Greenville, South Carolina, at age 68.
