Lance Nethery
Lance Nethery (born June 28, 1957) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre, coach, and executive. He played 41 NHL games with the New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers during the 1980–81 and 1981–82 seasons. The rest of his playing career (1979–1990) was in the minor leagues and in Europe, mainly with HC Davos in Switzerland, where he won two championships and retired in 1988.
Raised in Burlington, Ontario, he played college hockey at Cornell University, earning several honors: ECAC Second All-Star Team (1977), ECAC First All-Star Team and NCAA East First All-American (1978–79), and ECAC Player of the Year (1978). He was drafted 131st overall by the New York Rangers in 1977, and he still holds Cornell records for assists and points in a season and in a career.
After his playing days, Nethery became a coach and executive in Germany's top league. He coached multiple teams in the DEL, winning three league titles with Mannheim from 1994 to 1999. He later led Cologne as head coach and GM in the early 2000s, and served as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2001 Deutschland Cup. He joined the Frankfurt Lions as head coach in 2002 and helped them win a championship in 2003 as GM. He then served as GM of DEG Metro Stars from 2005 to 2012, and later led Köln Haie as CEO from 2013 to 2014.
In 2015 he became team principal of Füchse Duisburg, adding head coaching duties in 2016–17; he was released in February 2017 but returned in May 2018 as sporting director. Nethery is married to Elizabeth, and they have a daughter, Meredith, who graduated from Cornell in 2009.
