Christine Downey
Christine Downey (born March 26, 1949) is a former Democratic politician from Kansas. She served in the Kansas State Senate, representing the 31st district, from 1993 to January 10, 2005. Downey grew up in Abilene, Kansas, and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Wichita State University. Before politics, she worked as a teacher and was recruited to run for the Senate after Norma Daniels retired. In the Senate, she worked on pollution laws related to concentrated animal feeding operations and on reforming Kansas’s public university system. She did not seek re-election in 2004 and was succeeded by Carolyn McGinn. After leaving the Senate, Governor Kathleen Sebelius appointed her to the Kansas Board of Regents, where she served from 2005 to 2013. She has lived in Newton and Inman, Kansas.
