Frontier (film)
Frontier (Catalan: Frontera) is a 2025 historical drama directed by Judith Colell. The screenplay is by Miguel Ibáñez Monroy and Gerard Giménez Forner. The film stars Miki Esparbé, Maria Rodríguez Soto, Asier Etxeandia, Bruna Cusí, Kevin Janssens, and Jordi Sánchez.
It is a Spanish-Belgian co-production by Crespeth Films, Coming Soon Films, and Diagonal, with Bulletproof Cupid. It received support from RTVE, 3Cat, ICEC, ICAA, Screen Flanders, the Belgian Federal Government, BNP Paribas, and Creative Europe MEDIA.
Plot: Set in 1943 during World War II, in a border town near Sort. A customs officer, Manel Grau, defies orders to help Jews flee from Vichy France by crossing the Spain–France border, with help from neighbor Juliana and French smuggler Jerôme.
Filming took place in Pallars and the movie was shot in Catalan, Spanish, German, and French.
Release: Frontier premiered at the Seminci festival on October 25, 2025, and opened in Spain on December 12, 2025, distributed by Filmax. North American rights were acquired by Menemsha Films. The film also screened at Tallinn Black Nights and Palm Springs film festivals.
Reception: Critics praised the cinematography and production values and noted tense moments, but some felt the story didn’t always come alive emotionally or felt overpacked with characters.
