Chris Brubeck
Chris Brubeck (born March 19, 1952) is an American musician and composer who works in jazz and classical music. He plays bass guitar, bass trombone, and piano. He is the son of jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck. In 1972 he joined his father and brothers Darius and Daniel to form the New Brubeck Quartet, and later he formed the Brubeck Brothers Quartet. As a youth, Brubeck studied piano and trombone and taught himself bass guitar. In the early 1970s he played in rock bands Heavenly Blue and Sky King, but also recorded jazz with his brothers and guitarist Larry Coryell on two albums. This was followed by a trio album with Andy LaVerne. Until 1999, much of his career was with folk singer Bill Crofut. He then led the Brubeck Brothers Quartet with Dan Brubeck, and Triple Play with Joel Brown and Peter Madcat Ruth. Beyond performing, Brubeck has written lyrics for ballads and for his father's tunes such as “Blue Rondo à la Turk” and “Unsquare Dance.” He has composed musicals and a trombone concerto for orchestra. On September 30, 2023, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra premiered his piece Confluence: Double Concerto for Classical Guitar, Blues Guitar & Orchestra, performed by guitarists Thomas Flippin and Vasti Jackson.
