Sanjak of Salonica

The Sanjak of Salonica, also called Selanik or Thessalonica, was an Ottoman district from 1430 to 1912. Its capital was the city of Thessalonica. The surrounding lands formed the Salonica Sanjak, later part of the Salonica Eyalet (1846) and then the Salonica Vilayet (1867). The area covered much of northern Greece, including the Chalcidice peninsula and central Macedonia between the Vardar and Aliakmon rivers.

Thessalonica was briefly under Venetian control in 1423–1430 after its governor handed it over to keep it out of Turkish hands, but the Ottomans reconquered it in 1430.

During the Balkan Wars, Greece captured most of the sanjak in 1912, and Thessalonica fell on October 26, 1912. The northern parts went to Serbia and are now part of North Macedonia. In 1915 Greece created the Governorate of Macedonia and kept some Ottoman officials in place until Greek prefectures were established. The former Ottoman districts were renamed subgovernments and overseen by Greek-appointed commissioners.
