Randolph Mahaffey
Randolph Mahaffey (born September 28, 1945) is a former American basketball player. He was a 6-foot-7 forward from LaGrange, Georgia, who played college basketball for Clemson. He was part of four Mahaffey brothers who played at Clemson, a first in ACC history.
He was drafted in 1967 by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round (16th overall) but signed with the ABA's Kentucky Colonels. In his rookie season with the Colonels, he scored over 1,000 points and was an ABA All-Star in 1968. He wore numbers 25, 20 and 35 during his ABA career.
The Colonels traded him to the New York Nets on December 30, 1968, along with Manny Leaks for Oliver Darden and Andy Anderson. On June 12, 1969, the Nets traded him to the Carolina Cougars for a draft pick, and he played for the Cougars through the 1971–72 season.
Mahaffey appeared in the 1968 ABA Playoffs with the Colonels and the 1970 Playoffs with the Cougars. He averaged about 13 points per game in 1968 and 12 points per game in 1970, though his teams were eliminated in the first round.
Over his ABA career he averaged 11.9 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, finishing with 3,815 points, 2,554 rebounds and 507 assists.
Personal note: His grandson Trent Steinour, a 6-foot-10 forward from Lake Norman High School, committed to Clemson for the 2025–26 season; he is the son of Mahaffey's daughter, Lee Mahaffey Steinour.
