Chetnole
Chetnole is a small village and civil parish in Dorset, England. It sits about 6 miles southwest of Sherborne and 5.5 miles southeast of Yeovil, beside the River Wriggle in the Blackmore Vale. The parish has around 330 residents and about 128 houses.
The village has a railway station on the Heart of Wessex Line, with services operated by Great Western Railway. A Saturday service between Weymouth and Yeovil Junction is run by South Western Railway. The station opened in 1933 as a timber building and was replaced in the 1960s.
Chetnole Inn is a well-regarded local pub. The Parish Church of St Peter contains parts from several periods: a 13th-century nave, a 15th-century tower, a 17th-century porch and a 19th-century chancel. The name Chetnole is thought to mean Ceatta’s hillock.
Nearby, Nappers is a country house that was used as a military hospital during the First World War. The River Wriggle flows through the area, and the village once had a school from 1851 to 1938.
Chetnole is part of the West Dorset parliamentary constituency and shares an electoral ward with Yetminster. The nearest GP is in Yetminster, and the closest hospitals are Yeovil District Hospital and the Yeatman Hospital in Sherborne. The village is near a Roman road to Dorchester; a bus service (route 212) to Dorchester and Yeovil used to operate but has been withdrawn.
