Nankai 9000 series
The Nankai 9000 series is a group of electric passenger trains operated by Nankai Electric Railway in Japan. They have been in service since 1985. Built by Tokyu Car Corporation in Yokohama between 1985 and 1988, the fleet includes 32 cars arranged in seven sets (mostly four-car sets, with two six-car sets).
These trains run on Nankai’s Main Line, Wakayamakō Line, and Airport Line. They can operate by themselves for local commuter services or couple with 12000 series trains for the Southern Premium Limited Express.
Design and performance:
- Body: stainless steel
- Car length: about 20.7–20.8 meters, four doors per side
- Maximum speed: 110 km/h
- Track gauge: 1,067 mm
- Electric system: 1,500 V DC from overhead wires
- Traction: originally resistor control with field chopper; refurbished units use variable-frequency drives
From 2019, one set (9501) was refurbished as part of the Nankai My Train program, featuring a wood-themed interior, updated traction control, and a temporary orange exterior livery, based on a customer survey. The fleet continues to serve passengers on both local and express routes.
