Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) is a professional body for people who work in human resources (HR) and learning and development (L&D). It is a charitable, not-for-profit organization with a Royal Charter, and its headquarters are in Wimbledon, London.
Founded in 1913, CIPD is the world’s oldest professional body in this field and now has more than 150,000 members worldwide working in private, public, and voluntary sectors. Its chief executive is Peter Cheese (appointed in 2012) and the president is Cary Cooper.
What CIPD does
- It acts as an awarding body and training provider for HR and L&D qualifications.
- It offers certifications and continuing professional development (CPD) and accredits university programs to meet its standards.
- It conducts research and surveys on work, pay, talent, leadership, and the labour market, and helps inform public policy.
How it’s organized
- CIPD operates through about 52 branches in the UK, Republic of Ireland, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, and Gibraltar, with offices in other regions such as Asia and the Middle East.
- It has international partnerships, including Singapore Management University offering a CIPD-accredited master’s degree.
- A Dubai office opened in 2016 to support the Middle East region.
- CIPD Enterprises Limited is its subsidiary that provides commercial services.
- It also publishes People Management Magazine for its members.
