Charles R: The Making of a Monarch
Charles R: The Making of a Monarch is a 60-minute UK documentary from BBC Studios. It aired on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on 30 April 2023, just before Charles III’s coronation. The film uses the British royal family’s home videos spanning seven decades of Charles’s life. Narrated by Charles III, it covers his childhood, military service, family life, and public duties, plus many unseen moments and outtakes from the 1969 Royal Family documentary.
The program includes an interview with Queen Camilla and looks at Charles’s relationship with his heir, Prince William. It also features his parents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, his grandparents King George VI and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and his grandchildren Prince George and Princess Charlotte of Wales.
The Times gave it four stars, saying it strikes a balance between respectful history and intimate home movie footage, and that Charles comes across as modest, shy, and eager to please.
