Charles Gladstone
Sir Charles Andrew Gladstone, 6th Baronet (28 October 1888 – 28 April 1968), was a British teacher, soldier and public figure. He spent most of his career as a Master at Eton College, teaching there from 1912 to 1946. He studied at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. In the military, he joined the Territorial Force in 1912 and served in World War I, including time with the Royal Flying Corps, where he was captured and held as a prisoner of war. After the war, he stayed with Eton’s Officer Training Corps until 1924, when he resigned his commission and was given the honorary rank of lieutenant.
On the family side, he married Isla Margaret Crum in 1925, and they had six children. His eldest son, Erskine William Gladstone, became the 7th Baronet. Charles was the son of Rev. Stephen Edward Gladstone and Annie Wilson, and the grandson of Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. He even attended William Gladstone’s state funeral as a ten-year-old.
Charles Gladstone also held several public posts. He was deputy lieutenant of Hampshire in 1929, served as Vice-Lieutenant from 1948 to 1968, and was a justice of the peace for Flintshire. He was High Sheriff of Flintshire in 1951. In 1955 he was appointed Commander of the Order of Saint John. He became the 6th Baronet Gladstone of Fasque and Balfour on 2 March 1967 after his older brother, Sir Albert Charles Gladstone, the 5th Baronet, died. He did not use the title, and his son later became Sir William Gladstone, 7th Baronet.
