Chants (Craig Taborn album)
Chants is a studio jazz album by the Craig Taborn Trio. It was recorded in June 2012 at Avatar Studios in New York City and released on ECM on April 23, 2013. The trio features Craig Taborn on piano, Thomas Morgan on bass, and Gerald Cleaver on drums. The album lasts 64 minutes and 53 seconds, and all compositions are by Craig Taborn. It was produced by Manfred Eicher.
Critical reception was very positive. AllMusic gave it four stars, calling it a strong statement by Taborn as a composer and bandleader, and a thoughtful exploration of the trio format. The Financial Times also gave four stars, describing the music as exuberant with an exceptional group dynamic. All About Jazz praised it as a personal album whose hidden beauty reveals itself with each listen. Down Beat awarded 4.5 stars, noting its originality. The album was nominated for Jazz Journalists Association’s 2014 Record of the Year, but did not win; Wayne Shorter’s Without a Net took the prize.
