1978 Southwest Conference men's basketball tournament
The 1978 Southwest Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 2–4, 1978, at The Summit in Houston, Texas. The opening round took place on February 25 at the higher-seeded campus sites. Nine teams competed. Seeds 2 through 8 played in an eight-team single-elimination bracket, with the winner advancing to the final to face the top seed. Houston, seeded 3, defeated Texas, the top seed, 92–90 in the final to win their first Southwest Conference title and earn the conference's automatic bid to the 1978 NCAA tournament. The winning coach was Guy Lewis, and the tournament MVP was Mike Schultz of Houston.
