Ceriporia purpurea is a crust fungus in the Irpicaceae family. It was first described by Swedish mycologist Elias Magnus Fries in 1821 as Polyporus purpureus. In 1971, Marinus Anton Donk moved it to the genus Ceriporia, giving it its current name. A group of related species, the Ceriporia purpurea group, includes C. bresadolae, C. torpida, C. triumphalis, C. manzanitae, and C. occidentalis. Ceriporia purpurea is common in the temperate regions of Eurasia and also found in the northeastern United States, where it grows on decaying wood of deciduous trees.
