The Catacomb of San Nicomede was a burial site at the start of the Via Nomentana near Porta Pia in Rome’s Nomentano district. Its exact location is still unknown. Ancient sources say Saint Nicomedes was buried near the gate to the Via Nomentana (now Porta Pia). A legend says he was buried on land owned by presbyter Justus beside the walls on Via Nomentana. The Liber Pontificalis mentions a basilica built on his tomb by Pope Boniface V, and Pope Adrian I says he restored a church dedicated to the saint outside Porta Nomentana. From Antonio Bosio to the 20th century, several galleries have been found on what was believed to be the catacomb’s site, but none have been definitively identified as this catacomb.
