Castlemartyr
Castlemartyr is a large village in County Cork, Ireland. It is about 30 kilometers east of Cork city, 10 kilometers east of Midleton, 16 kilometers west of Youghal, and 6 kilometers from the coast. It sits on the N25 road and the R632 and the Kiltha River flows through the village. Around 1,600 people live there (as of 2016).
The village grew around Castlemartyr Castle, a 15th‑century fortress, and Castlemartyr House, an 18th‑century country house that is now a hotel. Nearby are ancient remains from the Bronze Age, plus ringforts and other old sites. Over the centuries, Castlemartyr was linked with the FitzGerald family and later the Boyle family (Earls of Shannon). The area was shaped by major events in Irish history and by the landscape work of Capability Brown when the estate was developed.
Today, Castlemartyr is a quiet community with shops, pubs, and two churches: Saint Joseph’s (Catholic) and Saint Anne’s (Church of Ireland). The village is home to the Castlemartyr Spa & Golf Resort, which employs around 200 people. Castlemartyr Enterprise Centre is in the old 19th‑century national school. Local sports clubs include Castlemartyr GAA and Mogeely FC. Many residents commute to work or school, and the area remains connected by the N25 road to Cork and Waterford.
