Carlton W. Veazey
Reverend Carlton W. Veazey is a minister with the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., and the president of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC). He started RCRC's National Black Church Initiative. Veazey was the seventh pastor of Zion Baptist Church in Washington, DC, from 1960 to 1993, when he was removed by a vote of the congregation. He studied at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and earned a divinity degree from Howard University School of Divinity. From April 3, 1970, to August 8, 1973, he served as a Republican member of Washington, DC's appointed City Council, appointed by President Richard Nixon, just before DC gained home rule. He is a strong advocate for reproductive rights and a vocal critic of theocracy and Christian fundamentalism. He also writes for Religion Dispatches.
