Butiama District
Butiama District is one of seven districts in Mara Region, Tanzania. It covers about 1,962 square kilometers. As of the 2022 census, about 281,656 people live there. The district center is the town of Butiama. To the north lies Roya District, across the Kirumi Bridge on the Mara River. Julius Nyerere, Tanzania’s first president, was born in Butiama, and the Mwalimu Nyerere Museum is in his hometown. The paved trunk road T4 runs through the district from Mwanza to the Kenyan border, and trunk road T17 runs from Musoma to Arusha, also passing through the area. In 2012 the district was divided into 20 wards.
