Burswood, New Zealand
Burswood is a small residential suburb of Auckland, New Zealand. It sits on a peninsula in East Auckland, bordered by the Pakuranga Creek on the north, west and east, and by Ti Rakau Drive to the south. The suburb covers about 0.53 square kilometers (0.20 square miles) and has a high population density, with about 1,600 people living there in 2023 and an estimated 1,690 people in June 2025.
History and geography
Burswood lies in the area of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki, where the kāinga Te Titoki and Mangatu once stood. Ti Rakau Drive was completed in 1973, and Fletcher Homes developed a 500-home estate in 1991. The Eastern Busway began construction nearby in 2022, including a planned busway station in the suburb. The Pakuranga Creek surrounds Burswood on three sides, and Burswood Reserve sits along southern banks formed by a lava flow from Styaks Swamp.
Population and living
In the 2023 census, about 1,596 people lived in 549 dwellings. The community is fairly evenly split between men and women, with a median age of about 40. A significant portion of residents (about 56%) were born overseas.
Ethnicity and language
The area is ethnically diverse: roughly 34.8% European, 7.3% Māori, 7.7% Pasifika, 55.5% Asian, 3.8% MELAA, and 3.2% other. English is the most common home language (about 86.7%), with many residents speaking other languages as well (around 45.5%).
Religion and education
Religious beliefs are varied, with 32.3% Christian, 6.0% Hindu, 4.9% Islam, 2.8% Buddhist, and 45.1% reporting no religion. Among those aged 15 and older, about 31.8% have a bachelor’s degree or higher, 35.8% hold a post-high-school certificate or diploma, and 32.2% have only a high school qualification. The median annual income is $47,200, with 12.3% earning over $100,000. Employment is mainly full-time (about 57.5%), followed by part-time (10.3%), with around 2.5% unemployed.
