The Trier of Fact
The Trier of Fact is a Hong Kong action film directed by Tong Wai-hon, starring Louis Koo, Eddie Peng and Philip Keung. The story follows two police officers with opposite methods who grow close but are forced to face each other when their ideas of justice clash.
The project was first announced in 2019 at FILMART, with Louis Koo and Nick Cheung in mind, Benny Chan producing, Tong Wai-hon set to direct, and backing from One Cool Pictures. Production was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Chan’s death in 2020. Tong Wai-hon later made his directorial debut with Bursting Point in 2022.
Principal photography began on 9 August 2023, with a ceremony attended by Tong and the cast: Louis Koo, Eddie Peng, Philip Keung, Bowie Lam, Amy Lo and Ken Law, plus additional stars including Raymond Lam, Kent Cheng, Chrissie Chau, Michael Wong, Raymond Wong, Sammo Hung, Tony Wu and Ansonbean. Koo plays a policeman who walks a fine moral line; Peng’s role involves scientific elements; Keung plays an informant to Koo’s character; Lo plays a police officer and trained for the part.
Plot: Inspector Ben Kwok (Koo) investigates Narcotics Bureau inspector Car Che (Keung), who is suspected of working with triads. The two form a bond over shared beliefs in justice, but Car’s methods remain controversial. It initially seems Car uses criminals to take down a drug kingpin, but Ben learns that Car is trying to protect his mentor from blackmail. Car’s actions may shield the Hong Kong Police, but Ben must decide whether to uphold the law or stand by his partner, leading to a showdown.
The late Benny Chan will still be credited as producer.
